In the weeks I’ve been working on this story, I’ve had multiple sources fall through, people and companies willing and eager to participate until they see the question, “What makes something microwave safe?” Then there’s a meep meep and a puff of smoke, and they’re off. I got nothing beyond the obvious. A CenturyLink outage that started on Thursday has left customers across the country without internet and shut down vital services including 911 emergency calls. And now the federal government is launching an investigation. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai announced on Twitter on Friday morning that he’s instructed the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau to launch an investigation into the outage, which has left 911 services unavailable for unnumbered people across the U.S. “When an emergency strikes, it’s critical that Americans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help,” Pai said in a statement. “The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling.” The Louisiana-based CenturyLink tweeted Thursday night that its engineers had identified a “network element” responsible for the outage. While some locations have regained … [Read more...] about Widespread 911 Outage Sparks FCC Investigation Into CenturyLink

As “Sharon” in If Beale Street Could Talk, Regina King so beautifully demonstrates the vulnerability of black women—at times without even saying a word. “Part of being the strong black woman is how vulnerable she [Sharon] is, and how vulnerable she is in quiet moments,” she told The Root. We spoke with the queen, Regina King, and her Beale Street beau, Colman Domingo to discuss the vulnerability of black women and the irony of the American justice system. See the entire video above. … [Read more...] about Regina King Breaks Down What It Means to Be a Vulnerable Black Woman

But what is $5,000 to someone Google says is worth $75 million? Pocket change? A casual evening out? Last year she gave over $18,000 to strangers! So here’s what I’m getting at: was this gift shade? This is not a question for me, as I am not certified like my former colleague Judge Kara Brown, but it is a question you can all ponder while I share details of the gift basket. Per The Blast: Sources at Petit Trésor in L.A. — which caters to the elite kiddos in town — tell The Blast Minaj just purchased a $5,000 gift basket for Cardi and Offset‘s new baby, Kulture Kiari Cephus.
