Throughout his presidential campaign, Donald Trump dismissed Syrian refugees fleeing horrific violence as a “Trojan horse.” As president, Trump’s administration has been treating political refugees from around the world with the same casual cruelty. As the Daily Beast reported on Thursday, agents at the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services have been working to make it as difficult as possible for people fleeing persecution to find safe harbor here. Part of the new “extreme vetting” policies pushed by Trump includes scheduling interviews first for those who applied for asylum most recently, ensuring that they are the least prepared for their critical interview with USCIS officials. According to the site (emphasis mine): The asylum process was never easy. But lawyers said the Trump administration appears to have made it harder than ever for people to get asylum. Most of the attorneys who spoke with The Daily Beast said they thought the changes were a move … [Read more...] about The Sadistic Process of Applying for Asylum in the U.S.

The rotors of a helicopter thump menacingly overhead, the first hint this is no ordinary museum. Signs and fences are telltale indications of a military presence, and indeed, Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton is an active military base. It's operated by the Fleet Air Arm, one of the five branches of the UK's Royal Navy. The base is a fitting spot, then, for the Fleet Air Arm Museum, home to over 100 years of aviation history, predominantly naval aviation. Biplanes and helicopters, jets and propellers, most with the cool foldable wings so common to carrier-based aircraft. But that's not all. There's also a prototype Concorde, and the proto-proto Concordes, the Handley Page HP.115 and BAC 221 that were used to help design the last supersonic airliner's iconic wings. And since the land-locked Yeovilton airbase isn't exactly conducive to exhibiting an aircraft carrier, one of the halls is mocked up to represent one, complete with wall-sized videos of launches and recoveries, and even what … [Read more...] about Britain’s Fleet Air Arm Museum is an awesome show of sea air power
It was a day seemingly made for happily ever after. On Saturday, Meghan Markle’s fairy tale came true when, at last, she married her Prince Charming Harry. The traditionally drizzly English skies gave way to dazzling sunshine, and as many anticipated, the ceremony was as refreshingly unexpected as the pairing of the biracial American actress and the sixth in line to the British throne, with the bride’s black heritage strongly represented throughout. But one thing we did expect were some major style moments, both from the bride and from the star- and nobility-studded crowd who attended. And for the most part (that Gucci was a miss, Sabrina Dhowre), we were not disappointed. Princess Bridal Chic Of course, beyond the “Will he or won’t he?” drama concerning the attendance of the bride’s father, the bigger mystery was who would design Markle’s wedding gown. While it was expected that she would choose a British designer for her big day, the … [Read more...] about Fashion and Fascinators: The High Style of Britain’s Blackest Royal Wedding (to Date)

Jalopnik Reviews All of our test drives in one convenient place. I’m no stranger to road trips, and have a habit of doing them in fun cars. Most of the time they go as planned; other times they go very badly. But a trip from London to Le Mans and back in a 2018 Porsche 911 GT3, one of the most hardcore and extreme Porsches you can buy, was thankfully be one of the smoother ones—and surprisingly more comfortable than anticipated. (Full Disclosure: Porsche provided a GT3 to get from London to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and paddock and team access, along with a hotel in France, but Jalopnik paid for travel from America to Europe and other expenses.) Why A GT3? The 911 GT3 is one of the more sporting variants of the current 911 lineup, which is saying something. It’s a lighter, more powerful, nimbler version of an already great sports car. With 500 horsepower on tap from its 4.0 liter flat-6 engine, the GT3 is more than capable of gobbling up miles at a fair rate of … [Read more...] about A 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Is Also A Surprisingly Great Road Trip Car
