My unreliable vehicles have turned my garage into a veritable prison from which I simply cannot escape. Night after night, I go to bed with aching elbows and shoulders, wondering if I’ll ever be done fixing these machines. I’m starting to lose hope. As a single guy with no kin nearby, my cars are pretty much my family. And if we’re going to use that metaphor, then I must have the most dysfunctional automotive family in history. I think my mom’s quest to ensure she ends up with a grandson came to a halt when I published my … [Read more...] about Am I In Over My Head? All My Old Cars’ Problems, Ranked
Putting 6 week old to bed
There exists a fine line in cooking between “old school” and “retro,” and it seems to be delineated by nostalgia. There was a time when these dishes were the height of entertaining elegance and fun family dining, but they fell out of favor for a reason. They are ghastly. They do not look good, they do not taste good. Still, some dishes considered “old school” may be due for a “retro” revival. Liver and onions are a prime candidate. For decades, this classic dish of sliced liver, pan-fried and smothered in braised onions, … [Read more...] about The everlasting pleasures of liver and onions
Caroline Ingeborn is the president and chief operating officer of Toca Boca, which makes digital toys designed around the way kids play. (My five-year-old loves giving buzzcuts in Toca Hair Salon, bandaging doves in Toca Pet Doctor and making weird milkshake concoctions in Toca Kitchen.) Ingeborn, who moved to the U.S. from Sweden to help open the the company’s San Francisco office, believes the gaming space has a huge responsibility to create more inclusive products. She talks to us about balancing her career and being a mom to a toddler, with a new baby on the way. Here’s how she parents. Past years’ winners have made me literally afraid to sleep in my own house for weeks on end. Let’s begin. Who can tell the spooooooookiest tale of all? If you’re new to this, here are the rules; if you’re not, congratulations, the rules are the same: Leave your scary stories in the comments. Or email me at [email protected] The cut-off for sending in your scary stories is October 25, 2018—please do not send me scary stories after that, as I like to compartmentalize my scared feelings with a concrete beginning and end, and I do not want to be spooked in November. (We already have midterms to deal with.) The story must be true. Don’t make it up. This is a contest for the best stories about the scariest things … [Read more...] about It’s the Scariest Time of the Year: Send Us Your True-Life Spookiest Stories!
