Intel Arc resurrects an old AMD and Nvidia feature | Digital Trends

August 11, 2022 by www.digitaltrends.com

Intel seems to be bringing back something that Nvidia and AMD had long given up on: the ability, and the incentive, to use dual graphics cards in a single system. Multi-GPUs were once a big deal, but the latest generation abandoned that idea for a variety of reasons. However, Intel has allegedly confirmed that you’ll be able to use multiple Intel Arc GPUs at once. Will that help Intel capture some of Nvidia’s and AMD’s customer base? Update: Intel reached out to us with a short clarification, saying: “Intel showed a Blender Cycles rendering demo at SIGGRAPH with Intel Arc graphics. Multi-GPU rendering support for Intel Arc and Intel Arc Pro graphics cards through oneAPI is supported starting in Blender 3.3. Intel Arc graphics does not support multi-GPU for gaming.” The original article follows below. A good few years have passed since some of us were yearning for a dual-GPU setup with one of Nvidia’s latest and greatest . Stacking Titan GPUs was something many gamers … [Read more...] about Intel Arc resurrects an old AMD and Nvidia feature | Digital Trends

Oppo’s new Apple Watch clone has an important spec inside | Digital Trends

August 11, 2022 by www.digitaltrends.com

Oppo has just announced its promised duo of smartwatches featuring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chip — the first wearables to adopt the new platform since Qualcomm announced it last month. Contents The Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 is here A familiar design with a twist Battery life, storage capacity, and more China only, for now The new Oppo Watch models build on last year’s Oppo Watch 2. However, neither is a direct successor to that earlier model. Instead, it looks like Oppo has split the difference, with the Oppo Watch 3 moving the specs down a notch to make room for a new Oppo Watch 3 Pro on the higher end. The Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 is here Oppo has notably gone for the lesser of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon wearable chips , the W5, rather than the W5+. Interestingly, this is the chip that Qualcomm has targeted at “segment-specific wearables” rather than “mainstream smartwatches,” but Oppo likely considers that good enough for its target market. It’s … [Read more...] about Oppo’s new Apple Watch clone has an important spec inside | Digital Trends

New X-NAND Flash Tech Doubles Flash Write Speeds

August 12, 2022 by www.tomshardware.com

The company behind X-NAND flash memory claims to have doubled the speed of its storage for its second generation of chips, as reported by Blocks and Files (opens in new tab) , by enabling data writes in parallel. This way, X-NAND can deliver SLC levels of performance from QLC flash, which is cheaper and comes in larger capacities. Neo Semiconductor’s X-NAND architecture can be applied to all generations of flash memory and involves dividing each plane of the 3D matrix into four to 16 sub-planes, each of which can be accessed in parallel, using page buffers to optimize speed. Gen 2 X-NAND (opens in new tab) (PDF) takes this idea and compresses it down, using one plane to write to another, whereas before, it would have used three planes to write to a fourth. See our feature here for a fuller write-up of how the technology works. The simple explanation is that it speeds things up, and a Gen 2 3D X-NAND chip can be written to at 3,200 MBps instead of the 1,600 MBps of the … [Read more...] about New X-NAND Flash Tech Doubles Flash Write Speeds

This brilliant device stuffs an entire PC into a keyboard | Digital Trends

Pentaform, a London-based computer company, is developing the Abacus PC, a complete Windows 10 computer that fits in a keyboard. The project recently raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter to manufacture the concept, which only costs $149 each. Pentaform’s Abacus is similar to a stick PC , but integrates all the components into a sleek keyboard/trackpad device, giving a nod to Sir Clive Sinclair’s ZX Spectrum, a 1980s-era personal computer that was equally compact and affordable. The only extra component needed to make this a usable PC is a screen. This mini PC supports 4K resolution at 30 fps (frames per second) when connected via its built-in HDMI port. There’s also a VGA connection so older monitors can be used, keeping costs at a minimum. You can even detach the computer portion from the left edge of the keyboard for easy connection to a TV, while you use the keyboard and trackpad from a sofa, or it can stay attached to the keyboard when using it within reach of a monitor. The … [Read more...] about This brilliant device stuffs an entire PC into a keyboard | Digital Trends
