Earlier this year, a Chinese rocket booster crashed into the lunar surface in a rare example of a piece of human-made debris colliding with the moon. Now, the site of this crash has been imaged by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, showing the crater created by the impact. The impactor was originally thought to be a piece of SpaceX hardware , but further investigation showed it was actually the booster from a Long March 3C rocket . The rocket was launched as part of China’s Chang’e 5 mission in 2014, and although Chinese officials denied the booster belonged to them , evidence of the composition of the object suggested it was indeed part of a Chinese rocket. This image, taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, has been enlarged by three times to show the impact location of the booster, near the Hertzsprung crater. In an unexpected twist, the impact actually created two craters smushed together — one 18 meters across and the other 16 meters across. This unusual … [Read more...] about See the crater left by a space junk impact on the moon | Digital Trends

NASA completes pre-launch test of its mega moon rocket | Digital Trends
NASA has completed what may have been the final ground test of its next-generation Space Launch System (SLS) rocket before its much-anticipated maiden mission to the moon. It comes after a failed attempt at the same so-called “wet dress rehearsal” in April, when a number of issues caused the test to be called off. Monday’s crucial test took place at Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, starting in the morning and concluding at 7:37 p.m. ET. The entire procedure took about 12 hours and marked the first time for the SLS rocket’s propellant tanks to be fully loaded with fuel. The test ended with a mock countdown, a critical period of any rocket launch when many activities take place in rapid succession. Today's #Artemis I wet dress rehearsal activities concluded after a modified countdown configuration and successfully adding propellant to the rocket. We will review the data and are meeting to discuss next steps. For updates: https://t.co/rZxnWJ0Kbi … [Read more...] about NASA completes pre-launch test of its mega moon rocket | Digital Trends
NASA’s moon rocket could launch as soon as August this year | Digital Trends
NASA says there’s a chance that its next-generation rocket, the Space Launch System, could launch for the first time this summer with a possible launch window opening in late August. The rocket, which recently completed a pre-launch test called the wet dress rehearsal, still has some tweaks required before it can be launched, however. The wet dress rehearsal, which took a number of tries to get right since the first attempt in April, was deemed a success upon its completion on Monday, June 20. Though the team did have to make some changes to the test to get the rocket through it, including masking off data related to a hydrogen leak which would have resulted in the calling off of a real launch. Now the rocket will be returned to its temporary home, called the Vehicle Assembly Building or VAB, so engineers can replace the hardware that caused the leak. Even with these niggling issues, NASA has been positive about the wet dress rehearsal and progress in getting the much-delayed … [Read more...] about NASA’s moon rocket could launch as soon as August this year | Digital Trends
