The Future of Vision: Augmented reality contact lenses will make you bionic

Technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives. Once a week in The Future of series, we examine innovations in important fields, from farming to transportation, and what they will mean in the years and decades to come. A decade ago, Google’s ambitions seemed unchecked: The company would design self-piloting cars through Waymo, sponsor moonbases , and even conquer death . One of the company’s plans: Smart contact lenses to measure the glucose level of your tears — and perhaps help reduce the damage caused by diabetes. “It’s still early days for this technology, but we’ve completed multiple clinical research studies, which are helping to refine our prototype,” wrote Google’s Brian Otis and Babak Parviz back in 2014. Seven years later, the company’s ego remains just as inflated, but Verily’s smart contact lenses are nowhere to be seen; the side project of Google parent Alphabet was officially abandoned in 2018. Yet smart lenses are finally becoming a reality, thanks to … [Read more...] about The Future of Vision: Augmented reality contact lenses will make you bionic

Summon this amazing Twitter bot to colorize your black-and-white photos

Coloring monochrome photographs is a practice that dates back to the earliest days of photography. With color photography unavailable to most consumers until the 1940s, members of the public who wanted to enhance the reality of photos often experimented with hand-coloring as an alternative. It was an incredibly time-consuming effort involving watercolors, oils, or pastels — and the results, while certainly distinctive, don’t necessarily look quite as realistic as their creators may have hoped. Today, turning black-and-white images into full color photographs is a whole lot easier — and the results far, far better. How easy? All you need to do is post, or spot, a monochrome image on Twitter and reply to it with @colorize_bot . Like summoning a colorizing Captain Planet, Colorize_bot — as it is known — will instantly spring into action with its digital Crayolas, leaving the user with a freshly multicolored image and a cheery, “Of course, nice to help you!” This all occurs in the … [Read more...] about Summon this amazing Twitter bot to colorize your black-and-white photos

911 hotlines are outdated, so Ginny Katz is building something better

In the grip of an emergency, the first move for many Americans is to call 911. The emergency response system has been around for decades, but like many institutions, it has struggled to keep up with technology. Call centers are easily overwhelmed in big emergencies, they often can’t track the locations of people calling from cell phones, and they’re vulnerable to hacking. An egregious example of this came in 2017, when a hacker used a malicious link on Twitter to hijack thousands of phones, forcing them to call 911 repeatedly, flooding call centers with false alarms. “I’ve been studying and working in disasters, diseases, and emergency management for over 10 years,” says Ginny Katz, founder and CEO of HazAdapt. “At the end of my master’s degree, I really began to dive into the tech because I thought we really need some better technology here, and it just seems like what’s on the market today is not cutting it.” This article is part of our continuing series, Women With Byte … [Read more...] about 911 hotlines are outdated, so Ginny Katz is building something better
