The future of cars: A new spin on an old idea could revolutionize autonomous vehicles
“Autonomous vehicles and autonomous driving [brought with it a huge amount] of hype. Everybody thought that, by 2020 or 2021, we would see a significant number of autonomous vehicles and autonomous services and autonomous robots. This didn’t happen. I think there is agreement that the reason for this is the lack of mature sensing technologies.” On the face of it, this is a strange thing for Ram Machness, vice president of product at a company called Arbe Robotics , to say. After all, Arbe makes sensors that help autonomous vehicles to drive. This is a bit like if Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, were to say that the reason the smartphone market declined last year is because nobody’s making good smartphones. Machness has a point, however. And it’s one that he hopes the company’s new technology — unveiled at this year’s all-virtual CES — will help change. With its new sensing technology, it believes it won’t be long before more autonomous driving tech is hitting the road. For real this … [Read more...] about The future of cars: A new spin on an old idea could revolutionize autonomous vehicles
Apple boss Tim Cook takes on Apple Car questions in interview
The so-called “Apple Car” has been jumping in and out of the headlines for years now, with industry observers trying to work out what route the tech company might take with a potential autonomous electric vehicle; a vehicle that, true to form, it’s never publicly discussed. It could, for example, work on creating the autonomous software and then license it to established automakers. Alternatively, it might prefer to partner with an automaker to help it build the Apple Car, or even take on the entire production process itself. Of course, Apple could abandon the entire idea, too. In an interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook released this week as a New York Times podcast, Kara Swisher did her best to try to prize some new tidbits out of Cook regarding the company’s plans for an Apple Car. But this is a man well trained in not spilling the beans. “In terms of the work that we’re doing there, obviously, I’m going to be a little coy on that,” Cook said in characteristic fashion. He went … [Read more...] about Apple boss Tim Cook takes on Apple Car questions in interview
Amazon Music now has a car mode, but don’t use it while driving
The Amazon Music app for iOS and Android now comes with an optional car mode that offers up a simplified interface that can automatically launch as soon as you connect to your car’s Bluetooth system. It looks like the ideal solution for those who don’t have an infotainment system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but want to stream music from Amazon Music while driving. According to an email from Amazon’s PR partner, the new feature was designed “to limit extensive browsing while driving.” Curiously, however, on the webpage that promotes car mode , Amazon warns its customers that they should not “interact with this app while operating your vehicle.” Which naturally raises the question: Why give the app a car mode at all? As if this warning weren’t sufficiently direct, the page follows up with an even more dire statement: “Interacting with the Amazon Music app while driving is dangerous and may result in serious injury, death, or property damage.” The … [Read more...] about Amazon Music now has a car mode, but don’t use it while driving
