As the U.K. government on Monday announced plans to intervene in Nvidia's takeover of Arm on national security grounds, analysts from Citigroup reconsidered Nvidia's chance to acquire the CPU and GPU developer. The observers believe that now that Nvidia introduced its own Arm-powered datacenter CPU, the likelihood of it getting approval to buy Arm just got significantly lower. Oliver Dowden, the U.K.'s Digital Secretary on Monday issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice (PIIN) concerning the takeover and expressed his concerns about the proposed acquisition and national security. The antitrust investigation in the U.K. is expected to be concluded by the end of July. "Following careful consideration of the proposed takeover of Arm, I have today issued an intervention notice on national security grounds," said Dowden, as reported by CNBC . "As a next step and to help me gather the relevant information, the U.K.'s independent competition authority will now prepare a report … [Read more...] about Citi Gives Nvidia’s Arm Purchase a 10% Chance of Approval

AMD’s Link 4 brings a massive overhaul to its remote play software
AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1 today, bringing a host of updates, improvements, and features to Radeon cards. On the list is AMD Link 4, which expands Radeon’s remote play application with a native Windows app, multiplayer streaming, and support for 144 frames per second (fps) and 5.1 surround sound. The biggest improvement is dynamic stream adjustment. Now, AMD Link will automatically detect your hardware and network conditions and adjust the stream accordingly. AMD claims its new streaming technology is “up to 60% better” after the company overhauled its streaming tech to lower latency. In a press briefing, AMD claimed Link’s player base “practically tripled” over the last year, causing the company to “go back and see what improvements [it] could bring to the AMD Link experience.” First up is a Windows application that allows you to connect to a computer with a supported Radeon card . Chinese Exascale Supercomputer Prototype Tested with AI Workloads
Chinese scientists have started to test a prototype of locally developed exascale supercomputer using convolutional neural networks (CNN) AI workloads. As reported by Next Platform the Tianhe-3 machine runs Armv8-based Phytium 2000+ (FTP) and the Matrix 2000+ (MTP) processors that were primarily designed for traditional supercomputing with full FP64 precision. Supercomputing and artificial intelligence are poised to become important competitive advantages that technologically developed companies and countries have against others in the coming years. Exascale supercomputers will be instrumental for traditional simulations, data analytics, and scientific discoveries, whereas AI supercomputers will be used for various pathfinding tasks, such as drug discovery or space exploration that do not necessarily require FP64 precision. The key thing is that to be competitive, supercomputing sites will need to support both AI and HPC workloads, which is why modern supercomputers use both CPUs … [Read more...] about Chinese Exascale Supercomputer Prototype Tested with AI Workloads
