During an idle moment away from running SpaceX, Tesla, and The Boring Company, prospective Twitter owner Elon Musk on Wednesday night tweeted to his 92 million followers how “chronological tweets seem much better than what ‘the algorithm’ suggests.” Musk was referring to the feature that lets you see the most recently posted tweets at the top of your timeline, rather than letting Twitter’s algorithm decide the order by picking out the tweets it thinks you’ll find most interesting. Chronological tweets seem much better than what “the algorithm” suggests — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 12, 2022 During an idle moment away from running online payments firm Block and perhaps pondering what the world would be like if he’d never created the social media behemoth, Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey chimed in with his own take on Twitter’s algorithm-generated timeline, explaining to Musk that “the algorithm is good at surfacing stuff you’d otherwise miss by not … [Read more...] about Elon and Jack hit Twitter to discuss a Twitter feature | Digital Trends

Elon Musk doubles down on support for this Twitter feature | Digital Trends
Several days after prospective Twitter owner Elon Musk suggested Twitter users switch their accounts to the latest-tweets feed instead of the algorithm-generated one, the billionaire entrepreneur hit the microblogging platform again on Sunday to repeat the advice. And also explain how to do it. By default, Twitter displays the algorithm-generated Home feed, which shows tweets that Twitter thinks you’ll find most interesting according to your previous interaction with the app. Content could include tweets from people you don’t follow (beyond retweets), such as viral tweets and tweets linked to particular subjects that you’ve shown an interest in. But it’s also possible to alter the feed to show tweets in reverse chronological order. This also reduces the amount of content in your timeline from accounts that you don’t follow. Musk said he believes the algorithm is manipulating users “in ways you don’t realize,” prompting him to pin a tweet to his account on Sunday explaining to … [Read more...] about Elon Musk doubles down on support for this Twitter feature | Digital Trends
Google shows ‘courage’ in the Pixel 6a | Digital Trends
The newly announced Google Pixel 6a doesn’t have a headphone jack. Instead, you’ll have to rely on your favorite Bluetooth headphones — say, the also newly announced Pixel Buds Pro . That’s convenient, no doubt. And, according to your favorite Apple blog, it’s a humorous bit of hypocrisy, given that Google a mere nine months ago released a promo video for the Pixel 5a that trumpeted the brilliance of design found in a circle while also heralding the phone’s inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack. (And all while mocking the overly serious tone of Apple’s promo videos from back when Sir Jony Ive was making a big deal out of things like shapes your toddler would recognize.) It’s hard not to watch Google’s video from August 2021 and not chuckle a little. It’s a fun watch. It’s most certainly tongue-in-cheek, in the same way that you could see Apple taking a swipe at Google for things like a lack of focus, or killing popular (though not revenue-generating) products — or, ya know, … [Read more...] about Google shows ‘courage’ in the Pixel 6a | Digital Trends
Twitter’s Experiment to Get You to Read Stories Actually Worked | Digital Trends
You’re more likely to actually open and read articles you see on Twitter if they nudge you to not share them first, according to results from a Twitter experiment. Twitter’s test prompted Android app users to open an article before retweeting it. Twitter shared the results of that feature on Thursday and concluded that people open articles 40% more often after seeing that prompt. People also opened articles 33% more before retweeting it, and Twitter noticed that some people held off on retweeting messages after getting the prompt. ???? More reading – people open articles 40% more often after seeing the prompt — Twitter Comms (@TwitterComms) September 24, 2020 The new initiative was Twitter’s way to help promote informed discussion on the platform rather than have people blindly repost articles before actually knowing what they are about. Moving forward, Twitter said that it’s going to tweak the notification to be smaller after you’ve initially seen it … [Read more...] about Twitter’s Experiment to Get You to Read Stories Actually Worked | Digital Trends
