With When Romance Met Comedy, Caroline Siede examines the history of the rom-com through the years, one happily ever after (or not) at a time. One of the things you quickly learn when you write an ongoing column about romantic comedies is that it can be kind of hard to decide what constitutes a rom-com. As soon as you move beyond clear-cut picks like When Harry Met Sally, things start to get a bit more complicated. Sleepless In Seattle and My Best Friend’s Wedding are both considered classic rom-coms even though they drastically break the traditional rom-com formula. Bridget Jones’s Diary straddles the line between being a rom-com and a female-led comedy. And then there are true female-led comedies like Miss Congeniality, Legally Blonde, and The Princess Diaries, which are sometimes lumped into the rom-com category, even though romance isn’t really their primary focus. It’s the old “I know it when I see it” adage, and it has to … [Read more...] about The Devil Wears Prada pulls off the perfect romantic comedy look, even though it really isn’t one

The indignantly distressed former PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley is not faring well in his legal battle against PBS, the network which released him from his contract in December 2017 over allegations of sexual misconduct. On Thursday, D.C. District Court Judge Anthony Epstein ruled that Smiley cannot compel the nonprofit network to turn over documents related to every romantic relationship a network supervisor has ever had with a subordinate since the early 2000s, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The documents are related to part of a discovery request that the jurist deemed too broad. In February, Smiley sued the network after it cut his show, saying that his firing damaged his brand, and that the company used the allegations “as a pretext to finally rid themselves of Mr. Smiley, who was not the ‘team player’ type of African American personality PBS preferred to have hosting a nightly national news and public affairs program.” The network filed a … [Read more...] about Tavis Smiley’s Lawsuit Against PBS Isn’t Going Too Well
Strange things might not be afoot at the Circle-K after all—despite recent reports that a third entry in the Bill & Ted franchise was finally and truly in the works, Ted “Theodore” Logan himself is now harshing our buzz. While promoting his new romantic crime drama, Siberia, Keanu Reeves told Yahoo! Entertainment that Bill & Ted 3 will be on ice a while longer. “I don’t know if it’s a reality,” Reeves said. “We’ve been trying for a long time to get that film made, and it still has its challenges.” And what challenges are those, given that Reeves, his longtime co-star Alex Winter, and franchise creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson are on a board, the script has been written, Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot is directing, and the film was being shopped around at Cannes as recently as last May? Reeves didn’t elaborate, but maybe studios were thrown by the idea of these righteous dudes now being middle-aged … [Read more...] about Keanu Reeves isn’t sure
While Democrats focus on sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Karen Monahan is once again speaking out about abuse she says she experienced in her relationship with Keith Ellison, a congressman from Minnesota and the state’s Democratic candidate for attorney general. “This is not going away and you are making it worse for you, your family and district by lying, smearing, getting others to do your dirty work, victim shaming, etc,” Monahan tweeted on Sunday. “You know I have the video and more. I am still trying to offer grace and a way out.” In August, Monahan’s son Austin wrote a Facebook post alleging that he found video of Ellison pulling his mother “off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a ‘fucking bitch’ and telling her to get the fuck out of his house.” In mid-September, Monahan released a note on Twitter that she says is an official medical record, writing: “Here is … [Read more...] about Karen Monahan on Keith Ellison Allegations: ‘This Isn’t Going Away’
December has been a wild within the Cardi B & Offset saga. Earlier in the month, Cardi announced she was breaking up with her husband of a year and father of daughter, Kulture. Then, Offset ambushed her at work in an awful attempt to win her back. She was visibly (and rightfully) annoyed. No dice. Soon after dropping her best visual work to date and continuing to be the bad bitch she is, TMZ unleashed a photo of the complicated couple on vacation in Puerto Rico. The pair appeared to be jet skiing into “reunited and it feels so good” bliss. Cue “Oh no baby, what is you doing?!” and “we were all rooting for you!” exclamations. Whoa, whoa, whoa, you got too much dip on your chip! Before anyone has a chance to whip out the thinkpieces, let’s clear up some things here. Cardi B and Offset’s jet ski adventure wasn’t the happily-ever-after scene from a rom-com, she was just jet skiing onto some dick. She wanted the D—the trash … [Read more...] about Don’t Worry, Cardi B Isn’t Jet Skiing Back to Offset. She Just Wanted That D.
