If you're a paying pro subscriber or are happy with Flickr's new 1,000-photo limit for free usage, you're fine. Otherwise, today is the last day to download your archive.Flickr, now under SmugMug ownership after Verizon sold it out of its Yahoo family of brands, made a sharp turn toward a subscription business last year. I finally realized I could've been a professional ping pong player. But tragically, it's too late for me now.I have good reason to believe in my ping pong skills, thanks to Forpheus, a robot I met this week at CES in Las Vegas. Made by Omron, Forpheus first appeared at CES last year to show off its ping pong prowess. It's back this year with an expanded range of movement and enhanced prediction skills. When I tell people I played ping pong with a robot this week, the first thing they ask is: "Did you win?" I tell them that winning isn't really the point. Though if we'd kept score, I probably did. The whole aim of Forpheus is to coach you on improving your game. The robot uses sensors on your bat (aka paddle) and four cameras to work out where you are and how you're moving. It plays using a multi-axis robotic arm that can mimic human tactics such as topspin. Feedback arrives via voice and on a screen, which offers tips about posture, positioning and swing. After just a … [Read more...] about A ping pong robot at CES 2019 made me wonder: Could I go pro?
So, say you, phones are boring. They don't do anything new. Well, good news: The new Huawei Mate 20 Pro is ready to bring some crazy ideas to the table. Huawei's latest flagship phone was just unveiled in London and -- like all Huawei phones -- it won't be widely available in the US, thanks to the Chinese company's ongoing friction with American security services. It's a promising smartphone that actually offers something new. Let's run down the features, starting with the craziest. This phone wirelessly charges other phones The Mate 20 Pro has contactless fast charging, but in settings the charge can be reversed, and other phones can piggyback on top and vampire a charge from it. I tried it with an iPhone XS... and it seemed to work! The idea of using one phone as a wireless charging pad for another is a bit of madness, but also … [Read more...] about Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro is a wild bag of phone tricks
The brand new Galaxy Note 9 and 10-month-old iPhone X have a lot in common -- especially when it comes to photography. Both have dual rear cameras, portrait mode, dual optical stabilization and cost $1,000 in the US. As such, photos and videos from the two phones are fantastic.Yet, with so many similarities I was interested in the differences. So I took them around San Francisco to see how they compared in their varying apertures, photo rendering and video processing and "Pro Mode" options. And yes, before you mention it: We know newer iPhones are expected as soon as later this month. We'll compare those to the Galaxy Note 9 as soon as they're released. In the meantime, we're using the most current iPhone available to us. Galaxy Note 9 has the S9 Plus' cameras but adds scene optimizationsThe Note 9 has the same cameras as the S9 Plus, which includes a nifty dual-aperture that can open or close to change the amount of light the camera gets. Samsung is the only phone maker today to … [Read more...] about iPhone X vs. Galaxy Note 9 dual camera comparison
