Block Based Coding Comes To the Raspberry Pi Pico

The Raspberry Pi Pico has been with us for just over a month and in this short space of time, there have been many projects for every level of user. But for those just starting their journey with code it can be a little daunting, and this is where block based languages such as Scratch come in to their own. Block-based Integrated Platform for Embedded Systems (BIPES) is a block based coding environment for MicroPython devices and in the latest release it now supports the Raspberry Pi Pico and other RP2040 based boards. The BIPES project was created just over a year ago and it supports many boards such as the ESP8266, ESP32, BBC micro:bit and now the Raspberry Pi Pico and other RP2040 based boards. BIPES works with Google Chrome and writing code for a project is made easy via a web interface which is written in Blockly. Before any code can be written, we first need to enable Experimental Web Platform features in chrome://flags so that we can use Web Serial to talk to the … [Read more...] about Block Based Coding Comes To the Raspberry Pi Pico

Geniatech Launches XPI-3288 Raspberry Pi Alternative

It may have a name that sounds like a 1960s spy plane, but the Geniatech XPI-3288 is a single board computer which looks like it has just stepped out of the Raspberry Pi factory, but it has a few differences that make it stand out from the crowd. Image 1 of 4 Image 2 of 4 Image 3 of 4 Image 4 of 4 Measuring the same as a Raspberry Pi 4, 3.3 x  2.2 inches (85 x 56mm), the XPI-3288 looks very similar to the Pi, in fact the placement of the four USB 2.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet is the same as the Raspberry Pi 3B. Powering the board is an Rockchip RK3200 SoC which features a quad core Arm Cortex A17 running at up to 1.6 GHz and a Mali-T764 GPU. What is different to a Raspberry Pi is onboard eMMC flash storage, available in 8, 16 and 32GB capacities and a decidedly "tacked on" optional WiFi jack which covers part of the CPU and prevents the easy use of heatsinks to cool the unit. The WiFi Jack appears to have a PCB antenna, but there are also breakouts for … [Read more...] about Geniatech Launches XPI-3288 Raspberry Pi Alternative

Raspberry Pi Cat Detector Gun Scans for Felines

Sometimes you're looking at a cat and sometimes you're not. We know what it's like.  But how you can know for sure? With Niklas Fauth's Raspberry Pi -powered cat detecting gun, of course! Don't worry, this cat-detecting gun is safe—shooting only images that are evaluated using machine learning to determine whether or not the user is, in fact, looking at a cat. The unit is housed inside of an old IR thermometer. The device relies on a Raspberry Pi Zero that powers a small screen where the thermometer readout panel used to be. The buttons on the gun appear to interface directly with the Pi, initiating an image capture and an object detection request. The images are evaluated using Tensorflow along with the COCO-SSD model. The accuracy of the cat scan is largely determined by the contents and size of the model used. To see this project in action, visit the original post on Twitter . MSI MEG Z590 Ace Review: New Ace in Town

While we still don’t have an Intel Rocket Lake-S Core i9-11900K CPU to use for testing, Intel Z590 boards have been rolling in. So while we await benchmark results, we’ll be walking in detail through the features of these brand-new boards. First up on our bench was the ASRock Z590 Steel Legend 6E Wi-Fi , followed by the Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Master and Gigabyte’s Z590 Vision G . Today, we take a close look at the MSI MEG Z590 Ace. We’ll have to wait for benchmark results, though, to see if it deserves a spot on our best motherboards list. The latest version of the Ace board features robust power delivery, four M.2 sockets, a premium audio codec and more. The new Ace also has updated styling on the heatsink and shrouds while still keeping the black with gold highlights theme from the previous generation. Emblazoned on the rear IO is the MSI Dragon (with RGB LEDs) and the Ace name (no lighting). We don’t have an exact price for the MEG Z590 Ace. However, the Z490’s … [Read more...] about MSI MEG Z590 Ace Review: New Ace in Town
