Miss the iPod? Astell&Kern has the cure — for a price | Digital Trends

May 13, 2022 by www.digitaltrends.com

In a move that has been anticipated for years, Apple finally — if somewhat awkwardly — confirmed that it will no longer make the iPod Touch , the last remaining iPod version. The reasons, according to Apple are clear: Given our ability to access music through all of our other digital devices (phones, laptops, tablets, and smart speakers), we’ve all moved beyond needing a dedicated device for listening to music on-the-go, especially one that can’t connect to streaming services like Apple Music through mobile data. Contents A&K Kann Max, $1,299, available in June 2022 A&K HC2 USB-C Dual DAC Cable, $249, available in June 2022 AK Pathfinder IEMs, $1,899, available in July 2022 That may be true, but Apple’s devices have in any case never fully satisfied audiophiles — a group of music lovers who expect convenience to go hand-in-hand with quality, not one at the expense of the other. Astell&Kern’s (A&K) lineup of hi-res digital audio players … [Read more...] about Miss the iPod? Astell&Kern has the cure — for a price | Digital Trends

Addition of Cable Power to HDMI simplifies longer cable runs | Digital Trends

June 6, 2022 by www.digitaltrends.com

According to the newly release HDMI 2.1a Amendment 1 specification, longer HDMI cable runs will soon be possible, even without the help of an additional power source. Amendment 1 introduces “ Cable Power ,” a feature that lets an HDMI source device, like an A/V receiver , game console, or streaming media device , provide the additional power needed to keep a signal strong enough to survive a journey that extends further than a few meters. If you’re raising an eyebrow right now because you’re already using a really long HDMI cable with no problems, it might be because you’re only sending lower-bandwidth content, like 4K video at 30Hz, possibly with HDR10. That kind of content only needs a Premium High Speed-rated HDMI cable, and these cables can indeed run to lengths of up to 25 feet without the need of an active cable (a cable that gets a signal boost from an external power source). However, any content that requires the full 48Gbps of an Ultra High Speed-rated cable … [Read more...] about Addition of Cable Power to HDMI simplifies longer cable runs | Digital Trends

Samsung Begins 3nm Production: World’s First Gate-All-Around Transistors

June 30, 2022 by www.tomshardware.com

Samsung Foundry had started the initial production of chips using its 3GAE fabrication process, the company announced (opens in new tab) today. The new 3GAE (3nm-class gate-all-around early) manufacturing technology is set to improve performance, cut down power consumption, and increase transistor density. However, to do so, early designs must be tailored for the node, which essentially means that 3nm GAA is not for everyone just yet. "Samsung Electronics, the world leader in semiconductor technology, today announced that it has started initial production of its 3-nanometer (nm) process node applying Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor architecture," the statement from the company reads. Samsung brands its 3GAE gate-all-around field-effect transistors (GAAFETs) as multi-bridge channel field-effect transistors (MBCFETs). The transistors' reduced leakage current is one of the key features, as the gate is now surrounded by the channel across all four sides. Another advantage is … [Read more...] about Samsung Begins 3nm Production: World’s First Gate-All-Around Transistors

AMD’s Ryzen 7 5700 Emerges Without Radeon Vega iGPU

June 30, 2022 by www.tomshardware.com

AMD's Ryzen 7000 (Raphael) processors may be around the corner. However, the chipmaker isn't ready to retire the Ryzen 5000G (Cezanne) lineup. In the shape of the Ryzen 7 5700, an unreleased chip has emerged in the wild. At first glance, the Ryzen 7 5700 looks like an iteration of the Ryzen 7 5700X or Ryzen 7 5700G . The Geekbench 5 (opens in new tab) submission (via Benchleaks (opens in new tab) ) detected the unannounced chip as part of AMD's Cezanne family, so it's theoretically a member of AMD's Ryzen 5000G family of APUs. The Ryzen 7 5700 features the same formula as the Ryzen 7 5700G. The chip has eight Zen 3 cores with simultaneous multithreading (SMT) and 16MB of L3 cache. The clock speeds are different, though. While the Ryzen 7 5700G has a 3.8 GHz base clock, the Ryzen 7 5700 seems to sport a 100 MHz slower base clock. In the Geekbench 5 run, the Ryzen 7 5700 averaged 4,617 MHz, which falls in line with the Ryzen 7 5700G's official 4.6 GHz boost clock. … [Read more...] about AMD’s Ryzen 7 5700 Emerges Without Radeon Vega iGPU
