Camera vs phone
Every digital camera is flawed. Image sensors can't capture light perfectly, lenses distort scenery, and photos so often seem blah compared with what you remember seeing. But Google, with its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, has found new ways to use software and hardware to overcome those flaws and get you better pictures. Its Pixel and Pixel 2 phones had already advanced the state of the art for smartphone photography, but the Pixel 3 goes even further. The Pixel 3 camera holds its own against Apple's iPhone XS despite having one camera tied behind its back. It all but dispenses with the camera's flash, using new low-light shooting abilities instead. And it offers enthusiasts a radically new variety of raw image that opens up photographic flexibility and artistic freedom. It's all possible because of a field called computational photography, a term invented in 2004 by Google distinguished engineer Marc Levoy while he was at Stanford, before he moved full-time to Google Research. For lovers of large-screen phones, the game is on. The V40 in particular can wag its three rear cameras at the Pixel 3 XL's single rear lens. LG is playing for keeps. Its LG V40 ThinQ boldly slams the weight of five (five!) cameras against Apple's iPhone XS Max and Samsung's Galaxy Note 9.This supersize phone for 2018 isn't holding back, but competition is cutthroat. The LG V40 must contend with big, premium phones from Apple, Samsung and Huawei on the high end. Meanwhile, these $1,000 phones are feeling pressure from cheaper-but-good phonemakers like OnePlus and Motorola. And on Oct. 9, the LG V40 will see even more competition when Google (likely) unveils the Pixel 3. The LG V40 has its work cut out for it. The phone has a lot to like: those three lenses on the back (Huawei's P20 Pro made that craveable earlier this year) and two on the front, plus oodles of camera features to put all those lenses to work. There's a large, bright screen, a cutting-edge processor, waterproofing, wireless charging and stereo speakers.
