The corporate president of Samsung Electronics has said a million Galaxy Fold smartphones have been sold, twice the estimates made in October. Young Sohn, who currently serves as the chief strategy officer at the company, revealed the number during an interview with TechCrunch in a conversation about getting new products into people’s hands early, in order to gain crucial feedback. “We’re selling a million of these products. There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000,” he said. If the Galaxy Fold had remained inside Samsung’s research and development labs, the company would never get the right feedback in order to launch it, he argued. This is actually evident in the Galaxy Fold’s short life. Following its announcement early in 2019, the first review models sent out suffered from several well publicized problems, which led to Samsung recalling the phones and delaying the public launch. In September a revised Galaxy Fold … [Read more...] about “Bold and risky” strategy pushes Samsung to sell a million Galaxy Fold phones

How Sony’s camera guru is transforming Sony Mobile, starting with the Xperia 5
When Sony first introduced the DSC-RX100 in 2012, it delivered DSLR-quality pictures in a pocket-friendly, point-and-shoot camera. It was a trailblazing product that used a brand new 1-inch sensor when everything else comparable around it used smaller, less capable sensors. This is the camera that helped the company’s imaging division become the powerhouse it is today. It was also primarily the project of Kimio Maki, who headed up Sony Imaging at the time. In June 2019, he became Executive Deputy President Sony Mobile and there are plans afoot to perform the same turnaround at the struggling mobile division. In the same way as the RX100 appealed to creative people who wanted pro-level products in their hand, Sony’s strategy to make its current and next generation smartphones more appealing follows a very similar path. Understanding the plan “We don’t say it anymore, but the best of Sony in your hand [a marketing phrase Sony used several years ago] is still … [Read more...] about How Sony’s camera guru is transforming Sony Mobile, starting with the Xperia 5
Apple’s working on a way to not charge you more for its redesigned, 2020 5G iPhone
Adding 5G to a smartphone at the moment seems to mean an increase in the price; but this may not happen when Apple launches the first 5G iPhone next year. At least, that’s according to a prediction made by well-respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has said that while the new components will cost Apple more, the company will make savings elsewhere to ensure the higher price is not passed on to you. Kuo says the additional 5G components will add between $30 and $100 to the cost of producing the iPhone for Apple. Through some renegotiation and adjustments to the way it currently pays its partners, Apple may be able to reduce costs elsewhere, and absorb the extra from 5G. What will this mean for the price of the 2020 5G iPhone? If prices for a 5G iPhone stay approximately the same as the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, then the cheapest model may cost $1,000, and the most expensive at around $1,450. For comparison, today you can buy the 256GB Samsung Galaxy S10 5G for … [Read more...] about Apple’s working on a way to not charge you more for its redesigned, 2020 5G iPhone

Vizio undercuts Samsung’s QLED TVs by hundreds of dollars with the Quantum
Previous Next 1 of 13 Vizio’s challenger to Samsung’s QLED TV is here, and in keeping with the company’s tradition of providing high performance at an enticing price, the 65-inch 4K HDR smart TV (PQ65-F1) will debut at retailers like Best Buy, Costco, and Sam’s Club for $2,100. To put that in perspective, Vizio’s Quantum comes in at $600 less than the comparably equipped 65-inch Samsung Q7F-series TV. The new P-Series Quantum TV — the flagship in Vizio’s 2018 TV lineup — is highlighted (literally) by a powerful backlight system that Vizio says can deliver up to 2,000 nits of brightness for intense specular highlights and especially vivid colors when viewing HDR content. The backlight system is broken out into 192 zones of local dimming (you can learn more about that term here) that allow the TV to keep dark areas black and not gray, even when bright objects are appearing elsewhere on-screen. In practical terms, … [Read more...] about Vizio undercuts Samsung’s QLED TVs by hundreds of dollars with the Quantum
