MSI Showcases AM5 Socket, X670 Platform’s Dual Chipsets

May 25, 2022 by www.tomshardware.com

MSI has showcased a couple of the brand's new X670 motherboards in the latest installment of the MSI Insider show (opens in new tab) . In its video, the company takes us on a small tour around the AM5 socket and the dual-chipset design for AMD 600-series motherboards. The AM5 socket, consisting of 1,718 pins, will accommodate AMD's impending Ryzen 7000 (Raphael) processors. The novelties of the new socket include an LGA (Land Grid Array) design, socket power up to 170W, DDR5 , and PCIe 5.0 support. The AM5 socket brings all that while retaining support for AM4 CPU coolers. It isn't the first time MSI has given us a close look at the AM5 socket. In a previous installation video, the company demonstrated how installing an AM5 processor is similar to installing an Intel chip. Despite shifting from a PGA (Pin Grid Array) to an LGA design, the AM5 socket preserves the same package size and z-height as the AM4 socket. Therefore, AM5 is compatible with previous AM4 CPU … [Read more...] about MSI Showcases AM5 Socket, X670 Platform’s Dual Chipsets

Streacom’s Open-Frame SSF Cases Go Totally Tubular

Streacom has announced a new mini ITX small form factor (SFF) case that is basically an open frame case designed for use in a vertical orientation. The new Streacom DA6 , and slightly taller DA6-XL, might appear minimal in the extreme. However, the case designer thinks they will appeal to two main PC building audiences; those designing a passively cooled build and those who want to give their premium components maximum exposure. We won't comment too much on the design appeal of these cases; Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you will have your own opinion on whether this is one of the best PC cases available . AMD’s AM5 Will Launch With Only DDR5 Support for Ryzen 7000, Dual-Chipset Design

April 24, 2022 by www.tomshardware.com

All signs indicate that AMD's next-gen AM5 socket platforms that will house the 5nm Ryzen 7000 'Raphael' processors will only support DDR5 memory when they arrive later this year, but it isn't official. However, we have now confirmed through multiple sources in the supply chain that the X670 and B650 AM5 platforms support only DDR5 memory, which has pricing implications for platforms built around AMD's upcoming Zen 4 processors. Additionally, we've also confirmed that AMD has moved to a chiplet-based design for the chipsets for its AM5 motherboards, so some models will come with two chipset dies. AM5 socket platforms, which will replace the aging AM4 platform, will support the PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 interfaces as we see with Intel's Alder Lake — but AMD hasn't confirmed that DDR4 support isn't an option. Our sources tell us that the X670 and B650 motherboards have no provisions for DDR4 support, and it isn't yet clear if Ryzen 7000's memory controllers even support DDR4. If they do … [Read more...] about AMD’s AM5 Will Launch With Only DDR5 Support for Ryzen 7000, Dual-Chipset Design
