As we all know, a musician's ability to remain relevant in the hellscape that is 2018 is dependent solely on their ability to make their songs and actions worthy of meme status. The master of this game, clearly, is Kanye West. Drake is undoubtedly a close runner-up.But friends, a new challenger has appeared. Her name is Ariana Grande. Thanks to her new song, 'Thank U, Next', Grande has an out of control meme on her hands. Allow me to explain.'Thank U, Next' is essentially a song (a really good song, actually) that has Grande going down the list of her most recent high-profile ex-boyfriends. She's had a tough run to say the least. "One taught me love," she sings, "one taught me patience, one taught me pain."Now, thanks to the power of the internet, that open hearted honest song about the breakdown of tragic relationships has become the meme to end all memes. At risk of over explaining the meme, here's an example:One taught me love, one taught me patience, one taught me … [Read more...] about Ariana Grande’s new song ‘Thank U, Next’ is now the world’s most flexible meme
Avenged sevenfold new song
As part of his current (and exhaustively ongoing) marketing campaign/sudden rightward shift/one-man attempt to personally destroy Twitter, Kanye West released a new song today, titled “Lift Yourself.” West dedicated the track to DJ Ebro Darden, who, among other major black figures in the musical world, has recently been publicly critical of West’s renewed willingness to throw his support behind Donald Trump. The song itself features a pretty standard Kanye soul beat, with a female vocalist singing, “We need to strive for liberty, lift yourself up on your feet, let’s get it on.” Then West himself comes in, unleashing some of the hardest-hitting lyrics of his career: “Whoopedy-scoop,” he raps. “Scoopedy-whoop-de-poop.” And that’s not, like, a hackneyed dismissal of hip-hop lyrics from some dusty old music critic, either; that’s an actual quote. It goes on for quite a while from there, as West Poops and Scoops along, … [Read more...] about Kanye releases new song where he literally just raps “whoopdedy-scoop-poop-poop”
On Sunday night R. Kelly reportedly live-streamed a new song on Instagram titled “I Admit.” In the nearly 20-minute song, the full lyrics of which can be found here, Kelly sings about how the sexual misconduct and “cult” allegations in the media are false, his own sexual abuse as a child, and how people speaking out about the allegations are trying to set him up. “I ain’t chasing these ladies, no,” he sings. “These ladies are chasing me.” In addition to the allegations of R. Kelly’s “sex cult” first reported by Buzzfeed in 2017, several other women, including one who sued Kelly for allegedly deliberately infecting her with an STD, have broken NDAs and are speaking out about Kelly’s alleged abuse. But aside from the lawsuit Kelly has yet to see charges for these allegations, which raises of the question of whether or not “I Admit” can potentially be used as evidence against him in court. Lyrics … [Read more...] about Could R. Kelly’s New Song ‘I Admit’ Be Considered Evidence?
Country music legend Willie Nelson unveiled a new political song called “Vote ‘Em Out” Saturday night while performing at an Austin rally for Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke. Nelson has been openly supporting O’Rourke’s bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in the upcoming midterms, drawing ire from some of his Trump-supporting fans. But the 85-year-old singer-songwriter from Abbott, TX, couldn’t care less. (He once wrote a song called “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” for chrissakes.) A sweat-drenched O’Rourke, a former punk rock musician, joined Nelson in a rendition of the famous country anthem, “On the Road Again,” a tribute to the Democratic candidate’s tireless campaigning that has taken him to all 254 Texas counties to stump and meet with voters, The Dallas Morning News reported. With the Austin skyline in the background, Nelson rallied the crowd with his new song, singing: “Vote ‘em … [Read more...] about Willie Nelson Joins Beto O’Rourke at Austin Rally with New Song, ‘Vote ‘Em Out’
Eminem has never really shied away from saying awful stuff in his songs, either as an edgy gag or because he’s just really pissed about his mom or whatever, but he admits that he actually went too far on his new song “Fall.” Speaking with Sway about his new album Kamikaze (via Vulture), Eminem acknowledged that he probably shouldn’t have called Tyler, The Creator a homophobic slur. “I was angry when I said the shit about Tyler,” Eminem told Sway, and while he used to admire Tyler, Eminem was offended when the Odd Future rapper criticized his music on Twitter (social media is a big factor in modern diss tracks). Specifically, Eminem’s “Fall” contains the line, “Tyler create nothin’, I see why you call yourself a faggot, bitch,” and he now says he regrets using the homophobic slur. “I felt like this might be too far,” he told Sway, “because in my quest to hurt him, I realize that I was hurting a lot … [Read more...] about Eminem knew he shouldn’t have said homophobic slur on new song, still did it anyway
