Nehalem Lead Architect Returns to Intel, Inspired by New CEO

In a sign that Intel's efforts to rebuild its engineering corps might be swift under the new incoming CEO, Glenn Hinton, the lead architect of Intel's Nehalem processors and several other programs, announced that he is returning to the company after a three-year retirement. In a LinkedIn post announcing his decision , Hinton cited the return of Pat Gelsinger, Intel's new CEO , as a prime motivator for rejoining the company. Hinton also remarked that he will be working on a high performance CPU project, and "If it wasn't a fun project I wouldn't have come back. As you know, retirement is pretty darn nice." (Hat tip to @DylanLJMartin for the spot.) Intel has been criticized for losing much of its top engineering talent over the last several years, with activist hedge fund Third Point recently penning a letter to Intel decrying its loss of semiconductor leadership, saying, "The Company has lost many of its most inspiring and talented chip designers and leaders, and our sources … [Read more...] about Nehalem Lead Architect Returns to Intel, Inspired by New CEO

Team Group Preps Overclockable DDR5 Modules

Team Group has been rather active in recent months announcing its intentions for the next-generation DDR5 memory modules. This week the company disclosed plans to build enthusiast-grade DDR5 UDIMMs with their own engineered power management ICs and voltage regulators in a bid to support extreme voltage hiking to boost overclocking potential. Team Group is apparently the first company to announce its T-Force modules with their own voltage regulating modules (VRM) and power management ICs (PMIC). The manufacturer says that its T-Force DDR5 modules for enthusiasts will be able to increase memory supply voltage (Vdd/Vddq) all the way to 2.6V, which seems to be an overkill. One of the interesting features of DDR5 memory modules is that they can be equipped with their own VRMs and PMICs in a bid to reduce voltage fluctuation ranges, reduce power consumption, potentially improve DRAM yields, and increase performance where possible. Memory modules with their own VRMs and PMICs were … [Read more...] about Team Group Preps Overclockable DDR5 Modules

Sonos and Ikea might be teaming up to offer speakers that look like art

Sonos and Ikea appear to be getting ready to announce one — and possibly two — new products in their combined Symfonisk line of wireless speakers . The first new product is likely a revamp of the existing $229 Symfonisk Table Lamp , which embeds a Sonos Play:1 speaker in the base of an Ikea-designed lamp, according to a report by The Verge . Given Ikea’s commitment to smart home products like its line of smart blinds and smart light bulbs , it wouldn’t surprise us if the next version of the Table Lamp included the Sonos One’s ability to be used as a smart speaker with your choice of Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa as the voice assistant. The second product is more intriguing: A possible wall speaker that can masquerade as a piece of art. The details are still sketchy at the moment, but according to two Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings unearthed by The Verge, this new speaker might take the form of a base module that can then be customized with a … [Read more...] about Sonos and Ikea might be teaming up to offer speakers that look like art

I tested 5 popular webcams on Amazon. Here are which to buy and which to avoid

The lowly webcam has taken on oversized importance in the past year. Never before have so many people relied so heavily on videoconferencing to do their work, as businesses across the world shut down their offices and millions of workers started doing their jobs remotely. Remote workers are right to go looking for a good solution outside of their crummy laptop webcams. Amazon is filled to the brim with affordable options from brands you’ve never heard of, which can be a dizzying experience to sort through. I picked five of the most popular options, with the explicit purpose of seeing if any of these cheap webcams are worth your time and money. None may be as good as the more expensive webcams from brands like Logitech , but not everyone wants to spend $100 on a webcam. So, let’s start with three I tried that weren’t terrible, followed by two that I would avoid. The 2nd runner-up: Nexigo N660P – $65 Previous Next 1 of 2 Let’s start … [Read more...] about I tested 5 popular webcams on Amazon. Here are which to buy and which to avoid

Atari Goes All-in on Cryptocurrencies and NFT

It's taken Atari less time to introduce its own Ethereum-based token , a crypto casino , and an NFT licensing business than it has to finally release the Atari VCS not-quite console it revealed in 2017 under the Ataribox moniker. Now the company's going even harder on crypto and NFT: It announced yesterday that it'd created two new divisions, Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain, as well as a reshuffle of its leadership team. The company said in its announcement that its now-previous chief executive, Frédéric Chesnais, would "focus on Licensing and Atari Blockchain." He was replaced by board of directors chairman Wade Rosen, who said that Chesnais "inherited a situation burdened with debt" and "eliminated debt and enacted a meaningful turnaround" during his tenure by pushing Atari beyond the gaming market. That push is where Atari started to get weird. (Even weirder than the Speakerhats it announced in 2017 , which is saying something.) Let's start with the Atari … [Read more...] about Atari Goes All-in on Cryptocurrencies and NFT
