Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla may have just clinched the cleantech Daddy Warbucks title. Silicon Valley VC firm Khosla Ventures announced Thursday that it's raised a new $1.05 billion fund. And half of it will go to cleantech startups. The Khosla Ventures IV fund follows the Khosla III, which raised $1 billion for traditional early stage and growth stage companies. The VC firm raised $300 million for its seed fund which invests in high-risk, high-return companies with a bent towards groundbreaking science or Internet developments. This latest fund will go towards early stage investments in cleantech, IT, mobile and Internet technology. The company has identified a dozen cleantech companies that can achieve unsubsidized market competitiveness, Khosla said in a release. The fund also will invest in a "cool dozen" categories in Internet and mobile in the post-PC worlds such as big data, emotion, interest graphs and consumer health, he said. India healthcare IT spending to hit $1.05B
India's healthcare providers are projected to spend 57 billion rupees (US$1.05 billion) on IT products and services in 2013, with the highest growth in expenditure to go toward the salaries of IT staff. In a statement Thursday, research firm Gartner reported that healthcare providers in the country will increase their IT spend by 7 percent this year from 53 billion rupees (US$977.6 million) in 2012. The spending includes products and services such as internal IT staff, hardware, software, external IT services, and telecommunications. Spending on internal IT staff will see the highest growth at 18 percent, compared with other categories. Spending on external IT services will rank second-highest at 9.7 percent to reach 14.5 billion rupees (US$267.5 million), up from 13.2 billion rupees (US$243.5 million) in 2012, driven by growth in process management and consulting. $2.75 billion to be spent on smart grid in 2010, report says
As companies small and large jostle for position in the rapidly growing smart grid market, more than $2.75 billion will be spent on core technologies for the sector in 2010, according to a new report. According to The Cleantech Group's 2010 U.S. Smart Grid Vendor Ecosystem report (.pdf), the market for a communications-enabled, IT-controlled power grid is dynamic, diverse and growing -- fast. The report identified four major trends within the smart grid sector: First, market players are increasingly interconnected and interdependent. It's a "connective tissue" across multiple layers of the smart grid, driven by the technology itself.
