The centerpiece of Asus' 2019 Computex press conference on Monday was the ZenBook Pro Duo, a high-end laptop that sports two 4K displays. But that doesn't mean its less expensive laptops didn't get some love, too.Asus' ScreenPad is a phone-sized screen that doubles as a trackpad. First introduced in last year's ZenBook Pro 15, it's been improved (it's now the ScreenPad 2) and ported to Asus' midrange laptops. What's new in the ScreenPad 2? It's slightly larger, more responsive and, perhaps most importantly, it now isn't powered by a discrete graphics card, which makes it much easier on ye' ol' batteries. If you're having trouble imagining it, just think of the trackpad in your laptop. Now imagine it as a 5.65-inch phone screen, with apps and all, and you have an idea of what Asus is going for. It comes loaded with Asus programs, but you can also put apps like Netflix, Spotify and Facebook Messenger down there. It also serves functions that compliment whatever you're running on the … [Read more...] about Asus loads ZenBook and VivoBook lines with ScreenPad displays
special feature How to Implement AI and Machine Learning The next wave of IT innovation will be powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. We look at the ways companies can take advantage of it and how to get started. Read More One of the continuing problems with Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is that humans typically do not understand how they achieve their amazing results. DNN models are trained on massive amounts of data until they surpass human accuracy, but the details of the models themselves are hidden inside thousands of equations. So, not human readable. How do neural networks see depth in single images? worth a read. We treat the neural network as a black box, only measuring the responses (in this case depth maps) to certain inputs. . . . [W]e modify or disturb the images, for instance by adding conflicting visual cues, and look for a correlation in the resulting depth maps. In other words, they mess with images to see how the model changes the depth map. … [Read more...] about How do neural networks see depth?
For the past 20 years, Melinda Gates has worked on the foundation she started with her husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, traveling the world on a mission to tackle poverty, hunger, health crises and other economic and education challenges. In that time, the foundation paid out $45.5 billion in grants as she met with people in need, as well as health care and aid workers, local and government officials, doctors, scientists, economists and others on the front lines. One thing stood out to her, though, which eventually compelled her to write her first book. That issue was the lack of female empowerment. Journeying through Africa, India, China, Europe and the Middle East led to her to conclude that not factoring gender -- the role of women -- into the foundation's problem-solving was their "big missed idea." It also led her to a pretty stark conclusion about the status of women in the US. "We're a long way from equality in this country," Gates said in a May 7 interview in San … [Read more...] about Melinda Gates says US is ‘a long way from equality’ for women
Nine years after Toy Story 3 seemingly delivered the perfect poignant goodbye to Woody and Buzz -- we're back. Disney and Pixar have found a new story deemed worthy of unpacking the beloved characters. Put another way, this 24-year-old series returns to tell a story... about a spork. Below is everything we know about Toy Story 4 which, to be fair, radiates Pixar's wholesome warmth. We've also included reminders of what happened in the previous trilogy, in case time has blurred those adorable childhood adventures. Trailers, themes and plot Trailer 1 The official Toy Story 4 trailer plonks us right back in Bonnie's bedroom, Bonnie being that kid Andy donates Woody and Buzz to at the end of Toy Story 3. After spending a second remembering just how much joy animated characters can bring, we're introduced to an entirely new toy: a plastic piece of cutlery known as Forky. Forky is Bonnie's self-made arts and craft creature built of spork, pipe cleaner and googly eyes. In a brief moment, … [Read more...] about Toy Story 4: Cast, trailers, plot, release date and more
Here's the thing about passwords: They're terrible. Passwords are easy to hack, easy to lose and hard to use. Worse still, passwords guard some of our most valuable digital assets. "There's a whole bunch of valuable information about you in the cloud," said Alex Simons, Microsoft's corporate vice president of program management. "Hackers are looking for things they can monetize. All of [your] accounts represent value, and the minute there's value then all of a sudden there's an economy and there are hackers that want to go after that economy." Now playing: Watch this: Inside a password-free future 2:46 CNET visited the Microsoft Garage — a hackerspace designed to test new technologies located on the firm's Redmond, Washington campus — to learn how biometric security like facial recognition, iris scanners, and fingerprint readers might someday replace passwords. Microsoft's biometric security initiatives contribute to the FIDO Alliance, a collaborative … [Read more...] about This is how we might finally replace passwords
