All the key moments from the Golden Globes

January 6, 2020 by www.abc.net.au

Ricky Gervais made things awkward, Joaquin Phoenix dropped the F-bomb, and Awkwafina made Golden Globes history.

Here are the key moments from the 2020 awards.

Ricky Gervais warned everyone not to get political

Spoiler : They did anyway.

Gervais warned he was going to let rip on the A-list Hollywood audience and he wasted no time doing just that during his opening monologue.

Gervais pointed out the hypocrisy of series like The Morning Show, that emphasise the importance of doing the right thing but which are made by Apple — a company that runs sweatshops in China.

The joke was extra awkward because Apple CEO Tim Cook was sitting in the audience.

“If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent wouldn’t you?” Gervais asked the audience.

“Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

That didn’t faze people like Michelle Williams , Patricia Arquette and Joaquin Phoenix , who used their acceptance speech to do just that.

Williams spoke of the importance for women to have a choice, Arquette mentioned the potential conflict brewing between the US and Iran, and Phoenix made a plea for people not to take private jets in the name of the environment

Awkwafina made Golden Globe history

She became the first woman of Asian descent to win best actress in a motion picture for her role in The Farewell.

The film is a comedy-drama about a family who decide not to tell their grandmother she is dying so they can schedule a family gathering before she dies.

Awkwafina used her acceptance speech to thank Chinese-American director Lulu Wang for “the chance of a lifetime”.

Joaquin Phoenix dropped an F-bomb

He won best actor in a drama film for his powerful performance in Joker, but Phoenix’s acceptance speech ended up being the main talking point from his win.

In what felt like a tangent at times , Phoenix started his speech by thanking awards organisers for the vegan menu.

He then thanked his fellow nominees whom he felt “honoured to be mentioned with” … especially Christian Bale who he was “a little too intimidated by”.

Phoenix then pivoted to Australia’s bushfires and climate change action.

Loading

“It’s really nice that so many people have sent their well-wishes to Australia but we have to do more than that.

“It’s great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives.

“We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards,” he said as the music played him out.

Cate Blanchett called out Australia’s volunteer firefighters

Despite being held all the way over in Los Angeles, the bushfire crisis gripping much of the country was mentioned multiple times throughout the night.

Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett, Patricia Arquette, Ellen DeGeneres and Pierce Brosnan were among those who mentioned the bushfires in their acceptance speeches.

But the biggest mention came from Russell Crowe when he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a limited series or TV movie for his portrayal of Fox News kingmaker Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice.

Crow didn’t attend the awards ceremony because he was in Australia, defending his property against bushfires.

In his absence, Crowe shared a powerful message about the fires and the need for climate action in his acceptance speech.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge gave a cheeky thanks to Barack Obama

The Fleabag writer and star used her second acceptance speech of the night to give a (dare I say) raunchy shout out to the former US president.

Mr Obama had put Fleabag at the top of his recommended list of TV shows to watch, which he tweeted to his 111.4 million-strong following

A scene during the first season of Fleabag shows the main character masturbating to a speech given by Mr Obama.

Jokes aside, Waller-Bridge had a great night , picking up two Golden Globes — one for best TV series in a musical or comedy, and another for best actress in a musical or comedy TV series.

That’s off the back of the four Emmys she won in September.

Kate McKinnon gave a heartfelt tribute to Ellen DeGeneres

DeGeneres came out as gay in 1997, as did her character in her comedy Ellen.

Saturday Night Live’s McKinnon thanked her for paving the way for gay people like her on TV.

The comedian, best known for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, received a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony.

She’s also twice hosted the Oscars, was the star in Finding Dory, and has an Australian link via her partner Portia de Rossi.

Jared Harris pointed out: ‘It’s not all about Netflix’

The star of HBO’s Chernobyl said those words while accepting the award for best limited series or TV movie.

And to be frank, he’s not wrong.

The streaming giant had a total of 34 nominations , but only won two awards. They were:

  • Olivia Colman winning best actress for The Crown
  • Laura Dern winning best supporting actress for Marriage Story

HBO won four, picking up two each for Succession and Chernobyl, and Amazon picked up two awards thanks to Fleabag.

Frozen 2 and Marriage Story didn’t win

There were films and series with a lot of buzz that were tipped to win big and they barely rated a mention.

They were:

  • Marriage Story — The Netflix divorce drama was nominated for six awards and only nabbed one: Laura Dern won best supporting actress.
  • Jojo Rabbit — Taika Waititi’s film about a young boy in Hitler’s army finding out his mum is hiding a Jewish girl in their home didn’t win any Golden Globes. It was up for two gongs.
  • Unbelievable — The US drama series about a number of rapes in Washington and Colorado had four nominations, including one for Australian Toni Collette. It went home with nothing.
  • The Irishman — The Netflix crime epic was nominated for five awards, but went away with none.
  • Frozen 2 — It was nominated for best animated film, but lost out to Missing Link, whose writer and director Chris Butler was just as surprised as everyone else.

Aussie women didn’t have a good night

Five Australians were up for awards tonight, but it was only Russell Crowe* who won.

Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Toni Collette were all overlooked in their categories.

* And before you point it out , we know Russell Crowe isn’t technically Australian, but we’re claiming him as our own anyway.
