Pretty much everything about the birth of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child remains a mystery at this point. We don’t know exactly when she’s due—it could be tomorrow, it could be mid-May! We believe she is not going to be giving birth in the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital, which has been the go-to spot for Kate and many other royal mothers. But we don’t know where she might go instead. We also don’t know how we’re going to find out when the child has arrived—via press release? Via an Instagram post on the new @sussexroyal account? This all said, there were a few reports over the weekend attempting to shed some light. The Mail on Sunday ran a somewhat salaiciously headlined account that claimed Meghan has “snubbed” the Queen’s doctors (referred to here as “the men in suits”) for the birth—yes, the same doctors that sister-in-law Kate used for the births of all three of her children. The outlet said that Meghan has instead picked “her own delivery team, led by an unnamed doctor.”
The two royal doctors in question—Royal Household gynecologists Alan Farthing and Guy Thorpe-Beeston—are “among the best in the world,” per the Mail on Sunday, but Meghan has reportedly decided not to have them directly involved. However, there will still be “some role for them,” as, per protocol, they will have to be on hand in case anything should go wrong.
A few sources are quoted in the report expressing confusion about the Duke and Duchess’s decision—“It did leave a few of us baffled” and “It is slightly surprising” and that sort of thing—while other sources are cited who acknowledge the decision is “personal” and that Meghan should not be judged for deciding what doctors are going to be involved in her birth process. There is also a cost factor, as, while the Queen’s doctors would not be taking a fee, her own team will likely “cost tens of thousands.”
Meanwhile, the Mirror claims that Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, will be traveling from London to Los Angeles shortly, to be in town for the birth of her grandchild. There have been reports about Doria moving to London on and off over the past year or so, but the Mirror reports that while Doria will be staying for a bit, she will be eventually returning to the U.S., “to get back to her dogs and work.” She will also, per the Mirror, be bringing along some items from Meghan’s Toronto pad, in an effort to help her daughter make her new digs at Frogmore Cottage feel more like home.
