More new housing planned for urban areas

October 17, 2008 by

The Ministry of Construction, in response to the Government’s request, will draw up a plan for real estate market development which is scheduled to be submitted to the Politburo in the first quarter of 2009.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the field of real estate stands at approximately 28.5 billion USD over the past nine months, accounting for 50 percent of the country’s total FDI.

More than 1,500 housing and urban area projects are currently being launched nationwide and more than 37 million sq.m of housing in urban areas are built every year, said Nguyen Manh Ha, director of the housing management department.

In addition, a lot of urban areas with modern infrastructure and good living conditions and high-rise buildings have been built, he added.

However, Vietnam needs to develop more than 35 million sq.m of houses to reach its goal of 20 sq.m of housing area per capita in urban areas by 2020.

On the other hand, housing demand in large urban areas is increasing, thanks to the State’s open housing policy and a recent policy allowing overseas Vietnamese and foreigners to buy houses in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Construction, in collaboration with related ministries, discussed the current state of the real estate market and examined a number of solutions to further develop this sector.
