First Android Phone: “T-Mobile G1 With Google”

If the video shown during the press conference is any indication, T-Mobile’s “G1 with Google” should give the iPhone a run for its money. Much was made during the press conference of the “totally open” platform (vs. Apple), though Apple wasn’t mentioned by any of the presenters. Here’s the press release. Although the features will be scrutinized and written about at length, one interesting item from the promotional video during the press conference appears to be a deeper integration of search into the mobile internet. It appears one can search from any page without launching a search app. There’s also a dedicated search button on the physical keyboard. During the Q&A session after the formal announcement many details came out: –Pricing: $179 (vs. the iPhone’s $199)–Commercial launch date: October 22, 2008–Data plans: $35 unlimited mobile web and messaging; $25 for unlimited data with some text messaging–3G network: T-Mobile is now live in 16 markets (27 markets by November, 2008)–Availability in EU: UK by November, across EU by 2009–Device has built in WiFi–The phone will apparently be SIM locked according to T-Mobile The data plan does require a voice plan. It can read Microsoft Office docs but it has no exchange…
