Jan 25, 2005 —1940: YorkBilly Graham preaches in cityBilly Graham preaches for two weeks at the Old Armory on East Maple Street in York. The Rev. Ralph Boyer of the York Gospel Center invites Graham, a recent graduate of Florida Bible Institute. Graham later said the meetings in York went well, so well that he stayed for a second week. He runs short of sermons, so he develops several more in his York YMCA room. “There was a good response to the Gospel,” Graham wrote in his autobiography, “even though my heavy (Southern) accent made it difficult for some people to understand me. I tried speaking louder than usual, but a few still did not get what I was saying. I wanted to blame the poor communications on their spiritual deafness, but it had to have been my dialect.” The York crusade is Graham’s first north of the Mason-Dixon Line.1940: YorkYorkers feed parking metersYork’s first parking meters go into operation: 5 cents for one-hour parking on streets and 5 cents for 30 minute parking in the square.
